Ah, February the 14th - the romance, the love, the flowers, the heart shaped gifts, the penis shaped chocolates and of course the Valentines cards! The history behind Valentine's day is shrouded in mystery. One legend states that Valentine was a priest who was imprisoned for performing soldier's marriages after it was forbidden - the Roman Emperor of the time thought that single men would make better soldiers so had outlawed their marriage. Saint Valentine continued to perform marriages for these young lovers in secret and, when his actions were discovered, he was sentenced to death.
Another legend tells of the imprisoned Valentine falling in love with a girl - possibly his jailor's daughter - who had been visiting him during his confinement. Before his death, he wrote a letter signed 'your Valentine' - an expression still in use today!
